How Early Can You Find Out Your Baby's Gender?

Title card for the Bonjour Baby guide to how early you can find out your baby's gender, Stoughton WI

Boy or girl?

For a question with only two answers, it holds a remarkable amount of daydreaming. The nursery you picture. The names you keep trying out loud in the car. The tiny outfit you saw last week and almost bought "just in case."

Here is the happy news: you do not have to wait for your 20-week appointment to find out. At our Stoughton studio there are two lovely ways to learn the answer: a SneakPeek DNA test from as early as 6 weeks, or seeing for yourself on screen from 16 weeks. Both find your baby's sex, boy or girl, which is the part most people mean when they say gender reveal.

At 6 weeks: the SneakPeek DNA test

The earliest option is not an ultrasound at all. The SneakPeek test looks for tiny traces of your baby's DNA in a small blood sample, and it can be done as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy, right at the studio. You can read more about how it works on our gender DNA test page.

In studies published by the company that makes it, SneakPeek reported over 99 percent accuracy. It is a screening test that predicts your baby's sex, not a medical diagnosis, and good timing and careful sample handling matter, which is why families like doing it at the studio instead of juggling a kit at the kitchen table. Results typically arrive the day after the lab receives your sample, and there is a faster option for families who truly cannot stand the suspense. We understand completely.

One sweet detail: you do not have to open the results yourself. We can tuck them away for a reveal, so the first time you hear "it's a boy" or "it's a girl," it is a moment, not an email.

An honest note for twin families: DNA tests work differently when there is more than one baby, and they cannot always tell you each baby's sex, so tell us before your test and we will walk you through what the results can and cannot say. And if you are wondering about the tests at your doctor's office, ask your provider what prenatal testing is right for you. Ours is simply the joy-only version, here whenever the waiting gets to be too much.

At 16 to 20 weeks: find out by ultrasound

If you would rather meet the answer on screen, our Gender Determination visits run from 16 to 20 weeks. You will watch your baby moving in real time, take home printed photos, and get a little sneak peek of 3D imaging while we are at it. By this stage, seeing the answer on screen is wonderfully reliable, though every baby gets a vote on how quickly they show it.

There is something about seeing it with your own eyes that makes it real in a way nothing else quite does. And if you are already dreaming about those chubby-cheek 3D portraits later in pregnancy, our week-by-week guide covers when each visit shines, with every option on our packages page.

Want it to be a surprise? We are very good at secrets.

Plenty of parents want everyone else to know before they do, or want no one to know until the baby shower. We happily work around whatever you are dreaming up. The person doing your scan can steer clear of revealing views while you watch, and if baby gets bold, we will simply ask you to look away for a moment. The answer goes into a sealed envelope for whoever you trust with it.

Make the reveal a moment

This is the fun part. Families leave our studio with sealed envelopes bound for bakers, balloon shops, and grandmothers sworn to secrecy. If you want the celebration ready-made, you can add confetti cannons to your visit, and our Premium Gender Determination visit comes with a reveal box and a heartbeat animal dressed in a tiny tutu or bow tie, depending on the news inside. Gift cards are available if someone you love wants to give this moment.

However you do it, take the video. You will watch it more times than you think.

What if baby will not cooperate?

It happens. Some babies cross their legs like they know exactly what everyone is waiting for. If we cannot determine gender by ultrasound at your visit, we will invite you back for one complimentary rescan on a weekday within four weeks. The answer is worth the wait, and the second look is on us.

And on the rare chance a DNA result and a later scan ever disagree, the anatomy scan with your own provider is the reference point. We will always tell you what we see, plainly and kindly.

Ready to find out?

One practical note: visits like ours are elective keepsakes, so insurance does not apply, and current details for every option live on our site.

Whether you want the answer at 6 weeks or a front-row seat at 16, you will find us on Main Street in Stoughton, an easy drive from anywhere in the Madison area. When you are ready, book online and we will take it from there. We would love to be the ones to tell you.

Bonjour Baby is an elective keepsake studio. Our visits, and the SneakPeek test we offer, are for the joy of finding out, not for medical decisions. The SneakPeek test is a laboratory screening test that predicts your baby's sex and has not been cleared by the FDA. We do not diagnose, interpret, or screen for any medical condition, and nothing we offer can detect or rule out anything about your baby's health. Our services never replace the care and testing you receive from your doctor or midwife, and we ask that every expecting parent we welcome be under the care of a prenatal provider. If you ever have a question or concern about your pregnancy, your provider is always the right first call.
