When Is the Best Time for a 3D/4D Ultrasound? A Week-by-Week Guide

Title card for the Bonjour Baby week-by-week guide to the best time for a 3D/4D ultrasound, Stoughton WI

When is the best time for a 3D/4D ultrasound?

The sweet spot for those classic chubby-cheek 3D/4D pictures is 27 to 33 weeks, when your baby has filled out beautifully and still has room to move. But there is no single perfect week. From the first flutter of a heartbeat to one last peek before delivery, every stage has something worth seeing.

Between your early appointments, the wait to see your baby's face again can feel long. If you have ever left a scan wishing you could have stayed a little longer with that little face on the screen, you are exactly who our Stoughton studio exists for.

Here is what each window of pregnancy looks like on our screen, so you can pick the moment that feels right for you.

Week-by-week chart of what you can see at a 3D/4D ultrasound from 8 weeks to 38 weeks at Bonjour Baby in Stoughton, WI

First, a quick translation: 3D, 4D, and HD

The letters can blur together. 3D gives you still portraits of your baby. 4D is those same images in live motion, your baby moving in real time. And HD adds a soft, lifelike finish that makes the picture feel almost like a first photograph. Our 3D/4D visits bring all three together, so you see your baby in portraits, in motion, and in that gentle glow.

8 to 12 weeks: your very first peek

This early, your baby is tiny, and somehow that makes it even sweeter. You can see and hear the heartbeat, watch that little flicker of movement, and take home your first black and white photos. Our Heartbeat & Baby Peek visit is made for this stage, and it is a favorite for announcing the news to grandparents.

From 12 weeks: a heartbeat you can hold

The sound of your baby's heartbeat is one of those things you never forget. From 12 weeks on, we can record it and tuck it inside a soft heartbeat animal, so the whole family can press a paw and hear it anytime. Big siblings are usually obsessed.

16 to 20 weeks: the whole little body

This is the full-body stage. Arms, legs, fingers, toes, all of it fits on the screen at once, and baby is usually wiggly enough to give you a proper look. It is also the window for finding out gender by ultrasound, if you want to know. Curious how early that answer can come? Our guide to finding out your baby's gender covers every path, from 6 weeks on.

20 to 27 weeks: personality arrives

Somewhere in this stretch, your baby's movements start to look wonderfully busy. A thumb finds its way to a mouth. Little stretches. Sometimes a yawn that looks far too big for such a small face. Facial features are coming into focus, and every visit starts to feel like a first introduction.

27 to 33 weeks: the sweet spot

If you are dreaming of that classic 3D/4D image, the rounded cheeks, the button nose, the face you will spend the next few months imagining, this is your window. Earlier than this, many babies are still growing into their cheeks. Later, the quarters get snug and baby often settles in head-down, which can make a full-face view harder to catch. In between, baby has filled out beautifully and still has room to move, which is why our Classic and Premium visits are built for this window. We welcome families up to 35 weeks, but 27 to 33 is the sweet spot.

When you are ready, you can see every visit option on our packages page.

32 to 38 weeks: one last peek

For families who have already been in for a Classic or Premium visit, our Last Peek session offers one more look before the big day. By now baby is snug and dreamy, and honestly, so are most parents.

What affects picture quality?

Every baby has their own plans. Position, fluid, and how baby is feeling that day all shape what we can see, and no studio can promise a perfect face shot every time.

What helps most is hydration in the days leading up to your visit. Clear fluid makes a clearer window to that sweet little face. You will find our simple prep tips on our FAQ page, and your prenatal provider can tell you what daily water intake is right for you.

You may also have heard that something sweet gets babies moving before a scan. Every baby is different, and if yours is napping, we will work with you to catch a good moment.

And if baby hides anyway? If we cannot get clear partial face images at your 3D/4D visit, we will invite you back for one complimentary rescan on a weekday within four weeks. Some babies simply like to keep us waiting.

Quick answers before you book

Do I need a full bladder?

No. Come comfortable. Hydration in the days before your visit matters far more than the hour before.

Does insurance cover it?

Our visits are elective keepsakes, so insurance does not apply and we do not bill it. If someone you love wants to treat you, a gift card makes a sweet baby shower surprise.

What do we take home?

Every visit includes printed photos, and your images and video clips are emailed to you to keep and share.

Come meet your baby

Whichever window you choose, bring the people you love. Up to six guests are welcome, because some moments are meant to be shared. Expecting twins? There is no extra charge for a second star of the show.

You will find us on Main Street in Stoughton, an easy drive for families across the Madison area and Dane County. Take a peek at our gallery to see what each stage looks like on our screen, and when the moment feels right, book your visit online. We cannot wait to introduce you.

Bonjour Baby is an elective keepsake studio. Our visits are for bonding and beautiful memories, not medical care. We do not diagnose, interpret, or screen for any medical condition, and our visits cannot detect or rule out anything about your baby's health. Our visits never replace the ultrasounds and checkups you have with your doctor or midwife, and we ask that every parent we welcome be under the care of a prenatal provider. If you ever have a question or concern about your pregnancy, your provider is always the right first call.
